ICED EARTH Busted "Smuggling" Merchandise Into Hungary, Cancel Budapest Gig
February 11, 2002ICED EARTH were forced to cancel their planned appearance in Budapest, Hungary on Friday, February 8th after the band were caught “smuggling” merchandise and pyrotechnic material into Hungary by the border officials, who held the entire group in custody for a 36-hour period before letting them proceed to the next show in Vienna, Austria. However, it appears that the band's merchandise and above-mentioned stage props were confiscated by the Hungarian authorities and were not returned to the group when they were eventually allowed to leave, a fact that caused a major headache for the notoriously hard-assed mainman/guitarist Jon Schaffer, who was understandably less than pleased with the final outcome. As a result, ICED EARTH ended up arriving at the Planet Music venue in Vienna shortly after 6:00 PM on Saturday, February 9th (the day of their scheduled performance there),which meant that they could not play the entire three-part, 150-minute set as originally planned (since there was reportedly "not enough time" to build up the whole scenery for the show),thus forcing the group to perform a shorter (roughly two hours long),"regular" ICED EARTH gig without pyros and other effects instead. At this time, there are no plans to reschedule ICED EARTH's show in Budapest.
